The Association between Celiac Disease and Eosinophilic Esophagitis among Children, in Isfahan, Iran

Background: The prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has increased in recent decades. Recent studies have found that the prevalence of EoE in patients with celiac disease (CD) is much higher compared with the general population. In this study, the prevalence of EoE in children with CD was calculated and their clinical symptoms, endoscopic and histopathological findings were compared.

The Circulating Midkine in the Newly Diagnosed Celiac Disease: Clinical Implications

Background: Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic inflammatory small intestine disorder caused by an abnormal immune response to an array of the epitopes of the wheat gluten and related proteins of rye and barley in genetically susceptible individuals. Midkine (MK) is an angiogenic cytokine, chemotactic in the direction of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and macrophages, and a T‑regulatory cell suppressor. So far, a possible relationship with CeD has not yet been explored. Diagnosis of CeD is based on serologic test in a clinical setting suggestive of CeD and confirmatory histologic examination of the duodenal biopsy. The objective of this study was to measure and compare the circulating MK in the celiac patients and healthy individuals.

The Effect of Nursing Consultation on Knowledge and Practice of Patients with Celiac for Adherence to Gluten-Free Diet

Background: Non-compliance to gluten-free diet (GFD), due to less of knowledge and inappropriate nutritional behaviors, is associated with an increase in disease progression and long-term complications in patients with celiac. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of nursing consultation on knowledge and practice of patients with celiac for adherence to GFD.

Cell Density Counts of the Intestinal Intraepithelial Lymphocytes in the Celiac Patients

Background: Increased number of intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) is a key histological finding in the diagnosis of celiac disease (CD); however, the number of IELs in celiac patients and healthy subjects may vary from one region to another. Additionally, there are some seronegative celiac patients with a borderline histology.

Evaluation of The Mean Percentages of The Peripheral Blood Gamma Delta T Lymphocytes in The Healthy Subjects and Celiac Patients in Isfahan

Background: An elevation in the mean percentages of the gamma delta T lymphocytes per total T cells in the epithelium of the small intestine has a diagnostic value for celiac disease. This study aimed to measure the percentages of the peripheral blood gamma delta T lymphocytes in the adults' celiac disease and healthy controls.

Phenotypical characterization of the peripheral blood T cells in patients with celiac disease: does it differentiate suspicious celiac disease cases?

Background: The present study aimed to study the immunological changes seen in the intestinal epithelium of the celiac patients could also be detected in the peripheral blood lymphocyte populations. Celiac disease (CD) is a small bowel enteropathy caused by permanent wheat gluten intolerance. One of the earliest signs of CD is an increase in the numbers of the intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (iIEL).

Premedication with sublingual or oral alprazolam in adults undergoing diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy

Background: Diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is uncomfortable for most patients. We determined the efficacy of alprazolam, administered orally or sublingually, as premedication for sedation during EGD.

The involvement of the HLA-DQB1 alleles in the risk and the severity of Iranian coeliac disease patients

Background: Coeliac disease (CD) is a highly prevalent autoimmune disorder that is triggered by the ingestion of wheat gluten and related proteins in genetically susceptible individuals. The CD is associated with human leucocyte antigen (HLA) genes particularly with HLA-DQ alleles encoding HLA-DQ2 and DQ8 proteins.

Frequency of Celiac Disease in Adult Patients with Typical or Atypical Malabsorption Symptoms in Isfahan, Iran

Background: Atypical presentations of celiac disease (CD) have now been shown to be much more common than classical (typical) form. We evaluated the frequency of CD among adult patients with typical or atypical symptoms of CD.

Serologic celiac disease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Background: There is an association of celiac disease (CD) with several gastrointestinal illnesses. We aimed to determine the prevalence of CD in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to evaluate the value of the routine serological tests for CD in these patients.

Should We Look for Celiac Disease among all Patients with Liver Function Test Abnormalities?

Background: Celiac disease (CD) has been found in up to 10% of the patients presenting with unexplained abnormal liver function tests (LFT). As there is no precise data from our country in this regard, we investigated the prevalence of CD in patients presenting with abnormal LFT.

Diagnostic Accuracy of IgA anti-Tissue Transglutaminase in Patients Suspected of Having Coeliac Disease in Iran

Background: As there are little data about the sensitivity of the IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase (IgA anti-tTG) antibody test in the clinical practice setting, we evaluated the sensitivity of this serologic test in a group of patients who were suspected of having coeliac disease and had serologic testing performed at commercial laboratories.

Do endoscopic markers still play a role in diagnosis of celiac disease?

Background: The primary aim of the study was “to determine the diagnostic value of endoscopic markers and fi nd ways to apply them in the diagnosis of CD”.

How Frequent is Celiac Disease among Epileptic Patients?

Background: A variety of neurological disorders have been reported in association with celiac disease (CD) including epilepsy, ataxia, neuropathy and multifocal leucoencephalopathy. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of CD among epileptic patients.
